Predictions for 2013
Matt Miller predicts: Paul Ryan will bolt from any eventual fiscal deal that raises marginal ta {keyword} x rates, setting himself up (as Newt Gingrich did in early 1990s) as the undisputed leader of the anti-tax wing of the GOP. Marco Rubio will squander his opportunity to recast the national debate (and outflank Democrats), because he ll simply talk about upward mobility, instead of offering {keyword} ambitious policies that would actually renew it. His star in the GOP will continue to rise precisely because of this choice. In his new role as president {keyword} of Purdue University, Mitch Daniels will become a compelling spokesman for greater cost effectiveness in higher education, leading many who wished he d run in 2012 to hope he ll reconsider in 2016. The story with the highest stakes in 2013 will get relatively little media attention because it s as dull as it is essential: the mad dash to get all those health exchanges ready to implement Obamacare successfully. New Australian research shows coral reefs are more resistant to ocean acidification than first thought. Scientists have been concerned that coral is vulnerable when carbon levels in the atmosphere rise, along with the acidity of the ocean. But an Australian National University study on the Great Barrier Reef suggests otherwise.Amid the threat to reefs from the effects of climate change, pollution and overfishing, Australian researchers have found some rare good news.A team at the Australia National University in Canberra has been investigating coralline algae, which are plants that act like a glue to bind coral. One useful analogy is that the algae are the cement, while the coral are the bricks that comprise a reef system. A new study has found that dolomite, a carbonate mineral, helps to protect reefs from rising ocean acidity, which is caused by the absorption of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.Lead author Merinda Nash, a doctoral student, says it is an important discovery. There was a lot of concern that the coralline algae, which plays a key role in building the reef and binding corals together, that this would be the first thing to dissolve as CO2 went up and that that would impact the reef structure, she said. So we found that this presence of dolomite actually reduced the dissolution rate significantly to about one tenth the rate of the algae without the dolomite, so that s quite good news. Many scientists believe that carbon emissions from the burning of fossil fuels are making the oceans more acidic.Coral reefs are home to hundreds of fish, sea stars, crabs and marine worms, as well as a wondrous array of other animals and shellfish.Reefs across the Asia-Pacific are widely considered to be at risk from a variety of threats. Conservationists say Australia s iconic Great Barrier Reef is at risk from industrial development, including dredging to build giant coal ports in the state of Queensland and from the run-off of pesticides from farms. By 2020 it is estimated that 7,000 ships will travel across the reef every year, as the export of Australia s natural resources intensifies. The reef is the largest in the world and snakes for about 2,500 kilometers down Australia s northeastern coast. It is the only living thing visible from space.

"What did, in addition to raising awareness of income inequality, political corruption and financial manipulation, was to focus attention on abuses of power. Just as important, 'Mea Maxima Culpa,' like a number of other documentaries this year, celebrates everyday heroes who find a way, despite their seeming powerlessness, to fight back against the powerful. In <our>case], the heroes are deaf, yet they manage to have their voices heard despite the enforced silence of the hierarchy of the church." Alex Gibney, "It's important and encouraging that issues vital to the Occupy movement appear throughout this year's range of shortlisted films, since virtually everywhere we look in American life we see the terrible imprint of our huge wealth gap on the lives of everyday people. America's for-profit system of industrialized mass incarceration, which I examine in my film, is just one example though perhaps the most strident example of our terribly misguided national tendency to put profit before people and principle." Eugene Jarecki, " covers a movement that many of today's protesters are mining for lessons and inspiration. <>activists and ACT UP] built the most transformative social movement of our time. I'm not surprised so many of these <protest> stories have dominated the awards circuit; they reflect the best elements of humanity, a desire to make the world a better place." David France, "How to Survive a Plague""We were not trying to change alaw, get petitions signed or create any specific framework for action with this film. We made the film with the premise that stories told without an overt agenda do matter. They sink into one's consciousness and inform one's decisions in life; they build empathy Doudoune Moncler Femme Courte and can re-frame the way people think about complex and sometimes divisive social issues." Message:First, rent or purchase a motorized scooter. If you ran a Steadicam while running by standing on a Segway, it will achieve the smoothest picture while moving quickly without a track. Second, stand on the motorized scooter with the steadicam and enlist an assistant to pull focus and run alongside you. A Steadicam vest can free your hands with which to steer the scooter. In addition, a handheld Steadicam can ensure that you're using a straight course, for you will not be able to steer effectively. Third, lean slightly forward to start the forward motion of the scooter. When choosing a route and the length of the run, the assistant will need to run alongside you the entire way.

Gaza: Clinton works for truce 'in the days ahead'
Israeli air strikes shook the Gaza Strip and Palestinian rockets struck across the border as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton held talks in Jerusalem in the early hours of Wednesday, seeking a truce that can hold back Israel's ground troops.
Hamas, the Islamist movement controlling Gaza, and Egypt, whose new, Islamist government is trying to broker a truce, had floated hopes for a ceasefire by late Tuesday; but by the time Clinton met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu it was clear there would be more argument, and more violence, first.

Hamas leaders in Cairo accused the Jewish state of failing to respond to proposals and said an announcement on holding fire would not come before daylight on Wednesday. Israel Radio quoted an Israeli official saying a truce was held up due to "a last-minute delay in the understandings between Hamas and Israel".

Who is Hamas? 5 questions about the Palestinian militant group.

An initial halt to attacks may, however, not see the sides stand their forces down from battle stations immediately; Clinton, who flies to Cairo to see Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi later on Wednesday, spoke of a deal "in the days ahead".

As she arrived in Israel after nightfall, Israel was stepping up its bombardment. Artillery shells and missiles fired from naval gunboats offshore slammed into the territory and air strikes came at a frequency of about one every 10 minutes.
